If you are developing property or planning on obtaining a building permit, it is a typical requirement in the Northwest that conifers with trunks greater than 8" diameter and deciduous trees with trunks greater than 12" diameter be surveyed.

You may want to check with the governing jurisdiction regarding the requirements for surveys for the permitting process.
